Firefighters tackled two fires in the open on one of the hottest days of the year.

And one of the incidents was spotted by a helicopter pilot, who flew closer to the burning woodland to check it was out of control, before alerting Huddersfield Fire Station directly whilst still in the air.

Firefighters were called at 9.45pm on Tuesday to woods near Pinfold Lane, Lepton.

Huddersfield Crew Commander Matthew Green said: “It would appear some kids had a camp fire and it had been left to burn out but spread.

“The area affected was around 200sq ft.

“We used beaters and tried to dig it out.

“Access was restricted due to the remote location and we couldn’t get our appliance close enough to the scene.

“We alerted Holmfirth’s Wildfires Unit which has a special 4x4 which is ideal for access.

“We spent around three hours at the scene. It was fortunate the pilot alerted us to the fire or it could have spread further.

“I would like to reiterate the dangers of fires in the open, particularly during the warmer weather.”

And fire crews from Rastrick also attended a fire in the open which could be spotted from the M62.

The fire had broken out on land at White Farm, Oldham Road and was accessed by a single track alongside the motorway near junction 22.

The alarm was raised at 10.20pm and the fire was around 10m by 10m.

Rastrick Firefighter Shaun Gibson said: “The reports came in that there was a fire on the side of the M62 between junction 22 and 23.

“We established the fire was on a single track alongside White Farm. It would appear an old shed which had been demolished and wood piled up had been set alight.

“Due to the location we had no access to hydrants and had to travel some distances and return to the scene.”

Crews left the scene at 1.20am.
