Tickets have been flying off the shelves for the first children’s book festival in the area.

The official launch of the Kirklees and Calderdale Pageturners festival at Eureka! on March 8 has now sold out after youngsters across the region got the reading bug.

The authors taking part in the big launch include Holmfirth’s Annabel Pitcher, who is one of the rising stars of children’s books.

One week of events will take place in schools, libraries and town halls, starting on World Book Day on March 7.

This will lead up to the one day finale at the University of Huddersfield on March 15 from 10am.

The festival, which is the first of its kind in Calderdale, kicks off on World Book Day on Friday.

This will be followed by a week full of events in schools, libraries and town halls across Calderdale and Kirklees.

The finale will take place at the University of Huddersfield on March 15 from 10am to 3pm, which will include workshops, street theatre and storytelling for the whole family.

At the same time children aged 12 years and over can get involved in the Pageturners Plus creative writing workshop, at the Hub at Huddersfield Railway Station.

Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities, Clr Steve Sweeney, said: “I’m delighted, but not surprised that the Pageturners festival has proved so popular. There are some great events happening, and although many are sold out, there is still some availability left for the later events in the festival programme.”

Tickets for the university event cost £10 for a family of five and cost £10 or £5 with a passport to leisure per person for the Pageturners Plus and can be bought online at www.kirklees.gov.uk/townhalls or by calling 01484 223200.
