A five-year-old Slaithwaite girl had her hair cut for the first time – to make a wig for sick youngsters.

Emma-Jane Taylor had her 10-inch long hair cropped for the charity Little Princess Trust.

She had never been to the hairdresser’s before but decided to lose her lovely locks to help other little girls who weren’t so lucky.

Emma-Jane, who attends Nields Primary School in Slaithwaite, went to The Waterside salon in the village, run by Tim Szoradi.

Emma-Jane’s mum Charlene said her daughter had never wanted her hair cutting before and loved wearing it long.

Her hair was so long she could sit on it. She wore it in many different styles and had a 10-inch long pigtail and as many as 13 plaits at one time.

But when she found out about the charity she was determined to lose her hair all in a good cause.

“She cried afterwards but that was just the shock,” said Charlene, who watched on with her other daughter Gabrielle, 11, and other friends.

“She had never even been inside a hair salon, never mind had her hair cut. Now she is brushing her hair every 10 minutes and we have bought her hair bands and slides.

“Everybody thought Emma-Jane had beautiful hair and couldn’t believe she was having it cut but she was just really touched by this charity.”

The landmark haircut was turned into a bit of an event as Emma-Jane’s friends were invited along for pink-iced cupcakes.

Salon owner Tim said: “We loved making a fuss of her.”

Childminder Charlene, 35, and painter and decorator dad Andy, 46, hope people will donate to the cause.

It costs the charity between £250 and £3,000 to create a hairpiece.
