CALDERDALE councillors are likely to refuse permission for a block of flats to be built in Elland.

Members of the Calderdale Council planning committee met on Tuesday and said they felt there are too many flats in the block, which would be sited in the garden of 41, Elland Lane, Elland.

Developers G & W Developments Ltd, of Norland, Halifax, want to build a three-storey block containing 18 two-bedroom flats.

The developers will buy the land only if they get planning permission.

Planning officers originally recommended that the application should be passed.

As the committee went against this advice, another report is to be prepared by officers, assessing the possible reasons for refusal.

Two letters of objection have been sent to the council.

Concerns are that car parking will dominate the site, mature trees will be lost and that there were too many flats for an area outside the town centre.

The BUPA Hospital, on Elland Lane, was one of the objectors, saying that sunlight and privacy would be lost, as the flats would overlook the eastern section of the hospital.

The final decision is expected to be made on September 23.
