Villagers gathered to oppose a housing plan for Flockton.

They met in the local club discuss strategies against a developing giant’s plan to build a housing estate on green land.

Persimmon hopes to build 46 two to five-bedroom houses on land off Barnsley Road, Flockton, under its upmarket Charles Church brand.

The application will be considered by Kirklees Council but there is already growing opposition to the proposals.

About 75 villagers met at Flockton Working Men’s Club to discuss their concerns.

Neighbours have objected to the plan fearing it will increase traffic and accidents on the busy A637 Barnsley Road, close to one of the village’s two single-file sections of road.

Some are concerned about the loss of green space and others are worried about the risks of flooding on the site.

Flockton resident Dave Coates, who chaired the meeting, said: “Barnsley Road is dangerous as it is and we’re concerned that this new development just below the chicane would put more pressure on the road and cause more accidents.”

Mr Coates added: “The fields are always flooding and when there’s a concrete surface there will be more water.”

Flockton Hall Farm, the site of 46 new homes.

The application will be adjudicated by Kirklees Council after a public consultation finishes on Wednesday.

Plans submitted to the council show access to the estate would be the current entrance to Flockton Hall Farm.

The farm owners will be given a new private access for their property but farm vehicles will be forced to drive through the new build estate to get access to the farm’s land.

In the application, the developer said: “The proposals seek to provide 46 dwellings including 12% affordable housing, which represents a housing density consistent with the local residential environment.

“As part of the approach to create a development which is fully integrated with the existing community, a mix of 2, 3, 4 and 5 bedroom residential properties are proposed. The proposed development will be at a density level appropriate for a village area with good transport links”.
