Hundreds of homes have been left without power because of flooding.

And Northern Powergrid warned it could be some time before they are reconnected because engineers cannot access substations.

The torrential rain has caused flooding of several of Northern Powergrid’s electricity substations in the Calder Valley, Bingley and Skipton areas resulting in power cuts for around 3,000 properties.

Due to the current flood levels Northern Powergrid engineers are currently unable to safely access the substations affected to assess the damage and coordinate repairs.

Engineers are ready to start work on carrying out repairs for those customers affected as soon they are able to access the affected substations and properties to ensure it is safe to restore supplies.

A spokeswoman for Northern Powergrid said: “We’re sorry for the disruption to our customers in the Calder Valley, Skipton and Bingley area who are currently affected as a result of flooding damaging parts of our power network.

“Our engineers are ready to respond but the level of the flooding means that our teams are unable to safely access the affected substations. We are continually monitoring the situation and as soon as we get the green light for access from the emergency services our engineers will start work repairing the damage caused by the floods to make power available for our customers.”
