Two sisters touched by the plight of flood victims have donated their Christmas presents to the cause.

Mia Robinson, 10, and Aimee McElroy, four, of Lindley, were so moved by images of the flooding in Calderdale they wanted to help.

Proud mum Rachel McElroy said: “I spoke openly to my daughters about what had happened and how some children had lost all their Christmas presents.

“They thought it was really sad and couldn’t believe how bad the floods were.”

Frozen-obsessed Aimee gave up some of the Disney-themed presents she got for Christmas and the girls also donated gift sets, books and selection boxes.

Rachel added: “It’s important children understand the pleasure in giving and being kind and they so wanted to help.”

Rachel had considered giving the presents directly to a family affected by the floods but decided instead to donate them for a raffle at a fundraiser at Elland Cricket Club on Saturday.

The Calderdale Flood Aid Coffee Morning and Bazaar has been organised by Paula Sugawara.

Halifax-born Paula, who has lived and worked in Japan for 20 years, was back home visiting her mum Avril Smith in Holywell Green when the floods struck.

Paula and her mum joined forces with Gary Pickard, John Sheard and Claire Walker-Hale to organise the event.

Tea, coffee and biscuits will be served and there will be a raffle and stalls selling cakes, arts and crafts.

Paula, who works in leadership development, is due to return home on Tuesday and had a race against time to organise the event.

Lots of raffle prizes have been donated and Paula hopes to raise £2,000.

“I really hope we can raise some decent funds to help people who have had a nasty time of it,” she said.

The coffee morning runs from 10am to 3pm and the raffle will be drawn at 2pm.
