A STUDENT designer from Huddersfield made her debut in the 2009 London Fashion Week.

Laura May, 21, a first year student at Huddersfield University, was one of 14 students to take part in the Fashion Awareness Direct competition.

She beat competitors from 24 universities for her place in the FAD final, organised by Vauxhall Fashion Scout.

Laura’s garments were shown off on the catwalk to the FAD jury who included Dolly Jones, the editor of Vogue.com and leading fashion scout Martyn Roberts. She drew her inspiration for her designs from the planet Mercury, the surface textures of the moon and Greek mythology.

Laura, from Hull, did not win but she met designers and buyers after the show.

First prize of £2,000 and a placement in the fashion industry went to Ana Belen Mereono from Nottingham Trent.
