Celebrity foodies have raised a glass to Huddersfield ale on a flagship BBC food show.

The Magic Rock Brewing Company had a surprise when their High Wire West ale was featured on BBC 2’s prime-time Food and Drink this week by presenters Kate Goodman, Michel Roux Jr and Richard Corrigan.

Their ale was one of three paired with a surf and turf pie, proving to viewers that beer is as much a dinner party drink as wine.

Drinks expert Ms Goodman, who joined the programme this series, described the beer as a ‘bit more tropical’ when pouring it for the others to try as they tucked into their hearty meal.

Mr Roux said that he would happily drink it but that it was a ‘bit too bitter for food’.

It is the second piece of good exposure for the company, who last week also made it into the Rate Beer website’s top 100 brewers in the world list.

Managing director Richard Burhouse said: “Seeing our beer on TV was a total bolt out of the blue-we had no idea we would be picked.

“We sent in samples a month ago but didn’t think anything of it so it was fantastic to find out we had been featured.

“I think our Rapture brew could work well with a pie because it’s malty and would maybe pair High Wire with a pizza.”

He added that the brewery, currently based at Quarmby Mills, Quarmby, had received more queries since the show but said that they would be unable to sell individual bottles to the public until they move into their new premises on the Ringway Industrial Estate in Beck Road, Huddersfield.

It was last October that the brewery won conditional approval from Kirklees Council for its plans to move from Quarmby to three adjoining units at Ringway Industrial Estate .

The brewery was formed in 2011 needed larger premises to meet soaring demand.

The firm has expanded from two employees to six.
