Football fans in Bermuda have gone Town crazy thanks to record signing Nahki Wells.

Locals on the Atlantic paradise isle can’t get enough of their biggest footballing export.

Town’s shop has been inundated with orders for replicas of Nahki’s No 21 shirt – and that includes from fans in Bermuda, more than 3,000 miles away.

One of the first Bermudians to sport a Nahki Town shirt is 20-year-old Ryan Roberts.

Though a Chelsea fan he’s more than happy to make Town his second team.

In an e-mail to the Examiner, Ryan said: “I am not a Huddersfield fan but due to Nahki’s arrival I will be following every game and, when I can, watching them when streams are available.

“I can speak on behalf of every Bermudian when I say we are proud our local hero has achieved what he has and we wish him every success with the club.

“I am sure in the near future I will see plenty of more blue/white and red/black shirts around the island.”

Wells became Town’s biggest signing this month when he was snapped up for £1.3 million from West Yorkshire rivals Bradford City.

As a youngster Ryan, who has a Bermudian father and an English mother, grew up wearing a Sheffield United shirt, his dad’s favourite team.

Ryan added: “While visiting family in the UK in 2001, at the age of seven, we made a trip to Anfield to do a tour of Liverpool’s ground.

“From there I became a Chelsea fan. I don’t know why but I just preferred blue to red as a seven-year-old and that’s how it happened!

“Two summers ago I had the privilege to visit Stamford Bridge where I spent countless hours (and pounds).

“I dream of the day I can return there to watch them play.”

Ryan, now a golf professional, told how there was a great deal of speculation in Bermuda about where Wells might end up after his “brilliant” season with the Bantams last year.

“Bradford had built up quite a large fan base from the Bermuda locals over the course of last season,” said Ryan.

“Every chance we had to watch a game our computers would be up and rapidly searching for a stream to catch a glimpse of our local hero.

“Once the rumour mill was spinning with many clubs from the Championship linked with him the excitement really began in Bermuda with everyone talking – and betting – on where he would end up.

“Once it was confirmed he would be joining Huddersfield the whole island went crazy.

“The simple fact that Nahki moved one step closer to the Premier League filled the island with joy.”

Wells, who has scored two goals in two games since his arrival, is cup-tied for today’s FA Cup fourth round tie against Charlton.

Instead Wells and fellow new signing Joe Lolley will be at the club’s Canalside base for a question-and-answer session with fans from 12.30pm.
