A former Huddersfield electrical store could become a supermarket or a clothing shop or a gym.

Developer Coal Pension Properties has applied to Kirklees Council to lift restrictions on what can be sold at the former site of Comet, Leeds Road Retail Park.

The Comet store closed in December 2012 after the chain went into administration.

More than 2,500 workers at stores around the country lost their jobs.

And according to the planning application, prepared on behalf of Coal Pension Properties (CPP), there has been little interest in the vacant unit because of a clause restricting its use to the sale of DIY and electrical goods as well as furniture and carpets. The restrictions were brought in when the retail park - whch incudes B&Q and Argos - was developed.

Following interest from companies including discount clothes retailer TK Maxx, Smyths Toys, Gym Group and others, CPP is hoping to make 2,000sqm available for the sale of ‘convenience goods’.

Several groups are said to be interested in the site.

The application says: “Over the course of the 21-month period to this point, there has been no serious interest in the vacant unit in any form.”

But it adds that Wilkinson Williams, which advertises and sells retail space, has “received strong interest from retailers and service providers that cannot currently occupy the unit due to the restrictions imposed... this includes occupiers such as TK Maxx, Smyths Toys and the Gym Group.”

Detailed reports submitted to the planners examines how the proposals could affect existing shopping areas of Huddersfield, including the town centre.

It examines various options that have been put forward for key sites in the town, including extensions to the Kingsgate Centre, the Queensgate area and the existing Huddersfield Sports Centre site, which is due to become a Tesco superstore.

A Kirklees Council planning committee will decide whether to approve the plan when a public consultation ends on October 2.
