A former UKIP candidate, convicted of assaulting his estranged wife, has quit his role as branch party chairman.

Greg Broome resigned as chairman of Colne Valley UKIP at a branch meeting on Tuesday, the branch confirmed.

Broome, 37, of Golcar, was found guilty of an assault on Joanne Broome, at the home the couple shared, on August 7, 2012.

The former UKIP candidate, who stood for the Golcar ward in May and November last year, was convicted at Kirklees Magistrates Court, on July 28.

District Judge Michael Fanning gave Broome a conditional discharge for the assault which left Mrs Broome with a cut below her lip.

The branch is expected to elect a new chair on September 2.
