A COUPLE whose romance began in the aftermath of war-ravaged London in 1948 celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary with a family party on Saturday.

Peter Nicholas, an RAF pilot, and his wife Ann met while they were studying at different medical schools in 1948 and graduated and married in 1953. They arrived in Huddersfield in 1954 as GPs in Almondbury, but relocated to Lepton in 1956 where they were in practice together until 1990.

They said: “We were very happy working in the village setting and really enjoyed our challenging lives in the community.”

Both are past presidents of the Huddersfield Medical Society and both are Fellows of the Royal College of General Practitioners.

Ann served as a magistrate on the Huddersfield Bench from 1968 to 1984. Peter took a year out of general practice in 1985–86 to work in a hospital in the north of South Africa.

Following retirement from general practice both continued working, assessing claimants from various Social Service benefits.

From 1992 to 2002 Ann was a member of the Disability AppealsTribunal Service. She is also a reader emeritus at All Hallows Church, Almondbury, which both attend regularly.

Interests include close contact with their three married children, Angela, Ivor and Richard, nine grandchildren and one great grandchild. Their passions are travelling, walking, gardening and bridge. Peter has a particular interest in local history, especially the local firework industry.
