A dad-of-two from Huddersfield who raped a nine-year-old girl was today jailed for nine years – and has vowed to return to Yorkshire when he is released from a Scottish prison.
Peter Carter was convicted of raping the primary school pupil and sexually abusing her for four years in the 2000s.
The 49-year-old was also found guilty of sexually abusing a seven-year-old. The abuse took place at Carter’s remote home in Argyllshire.
However, Carter, who left Huddersfield 19 years ago where he worked as an engineer, continues to protest his innocence.
Jailing him Judge John Beckett QC said: “In different ways you have traumatised your two child victims. Your conduct was reprehensible in raping a young girl who was nine years old at the time.
“The court must seek to deter you and others from committing such crimes and to protect children from you.”
Judge Beckett also ordered Carter to be monitored in the community for three years after his release from prison.
Defence counsel Dale Hughes said: “He continues to deny committing the offences. After his release from prison he intends to return to Yorkshire.”
The High Court in Glasgow heard that Carter moved to Scotland from England for a new life. He gave up his job as an engineer and started a carpentry business.

The older girl told the court that when police interviewed her about Carter’s abuse she was unable to say what had happened to her out loud.
She wrote down details of the sex assaults on a piece of paper.
She explained: “It was easier for me to write them down than say them. I was finding it very hard to get the words out.”
Carter, who ran a carpentry business in Argyllshire, claimed that his victims were lying about what happened.
He was placed on the sex offenders’ register.
