A FORMER Huddersfield New College student appeared in court accused of causing death by careless driving.

Lydia Presley, 18, pleaded not guilty at Bradford Crown Court yesterday to causing the death of Pauline Preston, 66.

A Renault Clio being driven by Presley was involved in a collision with Mrs Preston’s Ford Fusion on Greetland Road in Barkisland in May 2010.

The Halifax woman died later in hospital.

Presley, who was 17 at the time, was injured along with her 17-year-old passenger.

Both teenagers were students at Huddersfield New College at the time of the collision in May last year.

Presley, a promising hockey player and former Hipperholme Grammar School pupil, underwent surgery at a specialist hospital in Sheffield after the crash.

Recorder Amanda Rippon confirmed yesterday that Presley’s five-day trial would be listed to start on November 28 with another pre-trial hearing taking place on October 14.

Presley, of Pickwood Scar in Norland, was granted unconditional bail.
