A man has been jailed after travelling to Huddersfield armed with a foil-lined bag to steal from a shop to fund his drug habit.

Philip Drayton, 53, admitted the theft from Tesco in the town centre.

Kirklees Magistrates’ Court heard that he took £92 worth of razor blades from the Viaduct Street store on October 21.

He placed the goods in a bag lined with foil in a bid to avoid setting of the store’s alarms.

But Drayton, of Buckfast Avenue in Oldham, was caught and detained by staff outside.

He tested positive for Class A drugs following his arrest.

The court was told that in the 1980s and 1990s Drayton owned a joinery business.

However his marriage broke down, he became involved in drug misuse and lost his business.

His offending escalated and he was homeless for some time.

District Judge Michael Fanning told him: “This was a targeted theft. You came to Huddersfield armed with a foil-lined bag with the intention to steal to sell.”

He jailed Drayton for eight weeks and told him to pay £80 victim surcharge.
