The former manager of a Holmfirth pub has appeared in court accused of fraud worth more than £350,000.

Paul Kempster appeared before Kirklees magistrates yesterday.

The 44-year-old faces charges of fraud by abuse of position and false accounting.

The alleged offences occurred during his time as manager at the Huntsman Inn between August 2005 and April 2013.

Kempster is accused of dishonestly abusing his position intending to make a gain of £352,000.

He also allegedly falsified an account by not recording customer deposits and recording false debtors.

Vanessa Jones, prosecuting, told magistrates that the pub is owned by brewery company JW Lees.

She said: “The amounts involved are high, it’s a £350,000 loss to the company.

“Mr Kempster had a position of significant trust which he’s abused to a high degree.”

Kempster, of Clevedon Drive in Wigan, gave no indication of plea to the charges.

Magistrates committed his case to Leeds Crown Court, where he will first appear on July 16.

Unconditional bail was granted.
