A FORMER teacher at Holmfirth High School has received a national lifetime achievement award in education.

Dennis Richards was presented with the Ted Wragg Award for Lifetime Achievement at the National Teaching Awards in London.

Mr Richards was head of modern languages at Holmfirth during the 1970s.

He was awarded the OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list in June this year.

Born in Wakefield, he specialised in modern languages.

He began his career teaching French in Grimethorpe, Barnsley.

After teaching in Holmfirth he completed a degree in theology at King’s College, London. He has been head-teacher at St Aidan’s CE High School in Harrogate for 19 years.

A regular contributor to the national debate on education, he writes articles for the Times Educational Supplement and is a member of the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority advisory committee.
