A sporting dinner featuring former world boxing champion Joe Calzaghe gave a boost to an amateur boxing club.

Calzaghe spoke about his life and career at the dinner at the Cedar Court Hotel at Ainley Top in October.

A raffle and auction of memorabilia on the night raised £1,000 for Rawthorpe Amateur Boxing Club which is moving to a new gym.

The club, run by Mark and Sean Reynolds, is moving from the Gas Club in Huddersfield to Bridge Croft Mills in Tanyard Road, Milnsbridge.

Calzaghe, Britain’s only undefeated world champion, was joined on stage by his trainer and father Enzo while guest of honour was Dewsbury super-featherweight Gary Sykes.

But it was young Rawthorpe Boxer Jordan Yates who stole the show when he took to the stage to describe his experiences at the club and what the new gym will mean to the hundreds of young people who attend each week.

Organiser James Beattie, managing director of Bradley-based Seeitnowsports.com, said: “The event was a great success.

“Joe and Enzo were on top form - it was clear they had a very special bond which helped them reach the top in world boxing.

“It’s great to raise some cash for Rawthorpe. I have known Mark a long time and I know how much the new base means to him and the club.”

Mark, who founded the club in 1988, said: “It was a great evening and the funds will be a big help. Thanks to James and his team for supporting us.”

In February a sporting dinner with boxing legend Frank Bruno, also organised by Seeitnowsports.com, raised £3,000 for the Leanne Baker Trust, set up in memory of the sister of Meltham artist Darren Baker who took her own life while depressed.
