FOUR men from Huddersfield have been arrested by Manchester police after a hit and run incident which left an 84-year-old with serious injuries.

The incident took place in Diggle, Oldham, on Sunday.

The pensioner was crossing Huddersfield Road when he was struck by a car travelling south from Slaithwaite towards Diggle.

The arrests were the result of a joint operation between the Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire forces.

A 21-year-old man from Slaithwaite and a 22-year-old man from Marsden were arrested on suspicion of driving offences.

Two Slaithwaite men, aged 20 and 25, are being questioned over perverting the course of justice.

Police said the car, a Volkswagen Golf, failed to stop following the collision, which happened close to the junction with Dorset Avenue.

It is believed a Ford Fiesta may have been travelling with the Volkswagen at the time of the collision.

The victim, from the Diggle area, was taken to Tameside General Hospital suffering from multiple injuries.

He has had an operation on his hand and arm and is now in a stable condition.
