Green campaigners will lobby councillors ahead of today’s Full Council.

Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace and Kirklees Campaign Against Climate Change hope their lobbying will make councillors consider their views ahead of a motion submitted to the meeting.

The Green Party members on Kirklees Council have submitted a motion calling on the council to state its stance ahead of any future fracking bid.

Time permitting, councillors will vote on whether the motion should stand.

Clr Andrew Cooper, Newsome member and Green Party National Energy Spokesperson, said: “It makes no sense to extract fracked gas out of the ground at a time when we ought to be weaning ourselves off fossil fuels.

“We shouldn’t be subsidising an industry that is extracting the dregs of the fossil fuel age but investing more in clean renewable technologies.”

The lobby will take place at the Corporation Street entrance to the Town Hall from 4.15pm to 5.05pm and campaigners can then attend the public meeting.
