This dramatic video released by West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue shows the battle to free a stranded horse from a moorland culvert.

And the efforts of a vet and fire crews from Cleckheaton meant a happy reunion for Frankie with his owners, Claire Robinson and Lee Gibbison.

They fear Frankie had been stuck in the deep culvert at Rishworth for more than 30 hours but after the rescue, he was able to walk back to his nearby stable.

Claire said: “He is fine now. He walked down to the stables at the bottom.

“The fire crews and the vet did a fantastic job. I was panicking at one point that he would not make it because he was in there so long. I reckon he was in there 36 hours plus”.

Firefighters from West Yorkshire’s Technical Rescue Team led by Mark Allen rigged up a tripod to haul the horse from the culvert after it had been sedated.

Station Manager Alllen said that with the heavy downpour, Frankie could have been in grave danger had he not been found when he was.

“If the culvert had swollen with water, it could have gone over the horse’s head.”

Claire, who lives in Rotherham, has owned seven-year-old Frankie for 10 weeks.
