A woman, 90, has died in hospital after she was hit by a car driven by her husband.

The freak accident happened at their home in Rowley Drive, Lepton.

The victim was named locally as Mrs Mavis Wood, and her husband is Kenneth.

The tragedy also left the couple’s daughter injured and it is understood she had tried to push her mother out of the path of the reversing car.

Neighbours rushed to help the woman and gave first aid until Yorkshire Ambulance Service paramedics arrived.

Emergency services flooded the scene and police closed the road to allow access.

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance was flown to the scene and landed on the nearby Rowley Lane Junior, Infant and Nursery School playing fields.

Mrs Wood was taken to hospital but sadly died a short time later.

The Examiner understands her husband Kenneth Wood was driving his Nissan Micra when the tragedy occurred.

One neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: “There were so many police and ambulance we thought there was a major incident.

“We later learnt our neighbour Mavis Wood had been hit by a car driven by her husband Kenneth.

“Their daughter, who is in her 60s, tried to push her mother out of the way and was also injured. She had a bandage on her head.

“It’s horrific. We did used to speak to Mavis. She was a lovely woman.”

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Police were called to reports of a road traffic collision on Monday, July 22.

“The incident happened on Rowley Drive, Huddersfield. It involved a Nissan Micra. The Micra and a 90-year-old local woman were in a collision.

“The woman was taken to hospital but later died of her injuries.”

A file on the tragedy has now been passed to West Yorkshire Coroner’s office and an inquest will be heard at a date yet to be determined.
