OLDER people are to get more perks on buses across the region.

Some 325,000 Senior and Disabled Permit holders using Metro buses will soon be able to travel free and travel further.

Free local bus travel for people over 60 and disabled people comes into effect from Saturday April 1.

The move, announced by chancellor Gordon Brown in his Budget statement last March, may help to cut traffic on the region's roads.

The West Yorkshire Metro permits will also be valid for most bus journeys into Greater Manchester, Lancashire, South Yorkshire and North Yorkshire.

Metro chairman Clr Karam Hussain said: "Our permits can already be used for reduced fares on cross-boundary journeys into Greater Manchester, Lancashire and South Yorkshire.

"But from the start of April, they will entitle their holders to free travel on those journeys and into North Yorkshire as well."

A small number of journeys into North Yorkshire, including services such as Coastliner to York and the East Coast, and some special summer Dales services, will be excluded.

The free travel will be available on buses after 9.30am on Monday to Friday, and all day Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays.

Metro Blind Permit holders will still be entitled to free travel on all local bus and train services in West Yorkshire and on most cross-boundary services.
