Life on the streets is tough for Huddersfield’s homeless.

Lack of proper food and permanent shelter are just two of the issues they have to contend with on a daily basis.

But many of them forgot their troubles and tucked into piping hot fish and chips at the Methodist Mission Caf, Lord Street.

Thirty portions of Britain’s finest were provided free of charge by Tony Wells and his wife Isabel, owners of Lindley Fish Bar.

They gave out more free fish and chips at Halifax’s Ebenezer Food Support and Drop In from their other shop, Westgate Fish Bar in Elland.

The free meals mark the centenary of the National Fish Fryers’ Federation. Tony has also given away fish and chips to customers for £1 to help raise funds for the Fisherman’s Mission.

After the Mission food run he said: “It has been super, really, really good. We will probably turn it into an annual thing to put something back into the local community, without whom we would not be in business.”

Mission volunteer Zoe Naylor said: “We really appreciated the fish and chips, it was very nice of them to support us. They went down really well – we were left with just a pile of empty boxes.”

The Methodist Mission Cafe is open Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 2pm and also from 6pm to 8pm on Wednesdays. Anyone is free to drop in out of the cold and meet new people or have a meal.

The caf is staffed by volunteers and is always looking for donations and new volunteers to help continue its work. Ring 01484 421461 for details.
