A SCHOOL will become the first in the country to install free running equipment.
A £19,000 assault course will be put up at Colne Valley High School in Linthwaite.
Free running – an athletic way of crossing urban landscapes involving leaps and flips – has been popularised by a group of young enthusiasts known as Huddersfield Monkey Boys.
And now Kirklees Council has stepped in to encourage the sport
The council’s Colne Valley Area Committee decided on Thursday to commit £9,750 towards the equipment. The remaining £9,250 will come from Education and Specials Projects Ltd.
Area committee chair Clr Nicola Turner said: “There will be wooden structures of different shapes and sizes for the young people to jump on.
“It’s really exciting that Colne Valley High will be the first school in the country to have free running equipment. It won’t just be available for young people at the school, we’re going to make sure it’s open in the evening as well.”
Clr Turner praised Huddersfield Monkey Boys for pushing for the equipment. The Colne Valley Lib Dem said: “They are self-motivated young people who are doing something which keeps them fit.”
