FREE diabetes checks are being offered in Meltham to mark the opening of a new pharmacy.

People are being offered the chance to be screened free of charge at Lloydspharmacy, Market Street, to identify those most at risk of developing the condition.

Diabetes is known to affect 1.5 million people.

But it is estimated a further one million people go undiagnosed.

Early diagnosis can prevent serious health problems associated with the condition including heart disease, stroke and blindness.

Manager at the pharmacy Jeremy Higgs, said: "We are delighted that our Huddersfield branch is able to deliver this value-added service for our local community - a facility which could prove to be a real life saver."

The new pharmacy also features a blood pressure monitoring service, modern dispensing, a minor ailments scheme and a delivery service.

Meltham parish council chairman John Bakanoba officially opened the new pharmacy.
