FIREFIGHTERS were attacked by a youth in Batley.

A brick was hurled at a fire engine, narrowly missing a fireman and denting a door as officers put out a bin fire on the Wilton housing estate.

The attack happened at 9.30pm on Thursday.

Firefighters had just finished battling flames in the wheeled bin when a young man arrived and started shouting abuse.

He then threw a brick at the truck as it was leaving the scene.

Watch manager Barry Shevill was disgusted.

He said the brick narrowly missed the head of a fireman.

He said: "It is exasperating and so disappointing.

"Even in this case where there were no injuries, it just gets us so angry.

"They just see us as targets when we are only there doing our jobs.

"When I first joined it was very rare, but it is something that we are seeing more and more now.

"It is just so sad."

He said a description of the youth had been passed to the police and they were expecting legal action would be taken.
