Fly tippers have struck at a beauty spot in the Colne Valley.

People in Marsden have been left fuming over a huge pile of 21 fridges found dumped on Wessenden Moor.

The old white goods have been left on a track which runs between Butterley and Blakeley reservoirs, blighting the rugged landscape.

It is believed a man in a van dumped the fridges late one night.

Resident Deira Johnson took to Marsden’s Facebook page to post pictures of the fridges.

She has contacted Yorkshire Water, which owns the land, but has not had an answer.

She said: “The fridges must have been there for 10 days now and they’re just a real eyesore.

“You can even see them from the other side of the reservoir.

“I can only think that it must have been a local person, how else would they know about the spot?”

She suggested re-thinking the use of the gate which is meant to block access but has been left open on several occasions.

She said: “I’m not sure what the answer is. Yorkshire Water vehicles do need to use the gate but why not keep the barrier closed, with arranged access for people who need it?”

Eyesore

The mess has touched a nerve with locals still reeling from the decision by a planning inspector to allow Yorkshire Water to alter the historic Butterley Spillway.

Several have contacted Colne Valley councillor Donna Bellamy over the issue.

She said: “It’s very shocking. I’ve reported it to the council and now I’ve had a response from Yorkshire Water with a view to them making arrangements to remove them.

“I can’t understand how it happened and it must have been a scrap collector who’s done it.

“Fly-tipping is not just inconsiderate, it’s dangerous, and whoever is responsible needs catching because fly-tipping is illegal.

“If anyone did see something suspicious, or sees any more fly-tipping taking place they should record the registration number and get in touch with the police straightaway.”

A Yorkshire Water spokesman said: “It’s unfortunate that people have decided to use this area for fly tipping. We have agreed with Kirklees Council that they will remove the fridges for us as soon as possible.”
