CRICKETERS raised money in memory of a sports-mad teenager at the weekend.

Huw Thatcher, 15, collapsed and died on a football pitch three months ago.

The Holmfirth teenager lost his life to an undiagnosed brain aneurysm.

His family set up the Huw Thatcher Trust to support charities which work with people with brain injuries.

Upperthong Cricket Club organised a family fun day on Saturday to help raise money for the trust.

Teams from Upperthong, Holmfirth, Meltham, Slaithwaite and Thongsbridge cricket clubs took part in the competition.

Huw’s dad Nick, 49, was a member of the Upperthong team.

“This is a very happy and a very sad day for me,” he said.

“I can picture Huw out here this afternoon enjoying the company of the girls more than the boys, play-fighting and having as many hot dogs as he can get away with.

“But I’m very moved to see how many members of the cricketing community have come here.

“Doing positive things to remember Huw helps a little bit.”

Huw’s 13-year-old sister, Carys, was also at Saturday’s fundraiser.

Each team at the event included two adults, two under-13s, two under-11s and two under-9s.

The competition was won by one of the two teams from Holmfirth Cricket Club, known as the Holmfirth Hard Yards.

Rob Oakley, director of junior cricket at the club, was pleased to see so many people at the event.

“Huw was a member of the under-15s team here and we were all devastated when he died,” he said.

“The community round here is strong and this is a brilliant expression of that.”

Yorkshire captain Andrew Gale provided a signed England Lions shirt for a raffle at the event, while former Test cricketer Andrew Flintoff donated a signed bat.

The cricket day raised more than £2,000, which will be split between the trust and the club.

Huw, who attended Holmfirth High School, collapsed while playing for Hepworth United Juniors in a game against Brighouse Town Juniors on March 13.

His uncle, Steve Thatcher, is cycling from Cardiff to Holmfirth on Friday to raise money for the trust.
