Family and friends are rallying round a terminal cancer victim and hope to send her on a dream trip of a lifetime.

Sarah Brooke, 41, of Kirkburton has been given six to 18 months to live after being diagnosed with bowel cancer which has spread to her stomach.

She had dreamed of going on a cruise with her husband Dale after their children Kelly, 19, and 16-year-old Ryan had left home, but with time running out her friends are now trying to raise enough money to send the family on the trip together.

They have staged a number of events, including a pool and darts tournament, a charity night at a club and a friend cycled from Lake Windermere to Huddersfield to help raise money.

So far just under £5,000 has been collected for the cause, called Sarah’s Sunshine, and a sponsored trolley push is being staged through Huddersfield on June 6.

Morrisons has donated a trolley and a number of Sarah’s friends will be in fancy dress as they push it through the town, starting in Moldgreen and ending in Kirkburton.

Sarah’s sister Davina Gray said: “She has always dreamed of going on a cruise and we are really hoping she will be able to.

“We want to do it for her and also for her two children so they have some wonderful memories of their mum.

“A Mediterranean cruise would be lovely, but if the doctors think she is not well enough then we would look at something closer to home and she would love to stay in a log cabin at Lake Windermere.

“Lots of people have already done so much and local businesses have helped as well. We are overwhelmed with it.

“She is very well known in Kirkburton and has lots of friends.”

Before her diagnosis Sarah worked with Kirklees Council’s rapid response care team.
