MASSES of flowers, cards and messages mark the spot where a 28-year-old man died on Saturday.

Police today named the victim of the horror smash as Leigh Sedgwick, from Bradley.

Since the accident when Mr Sedgwick's Subaru careered out of control near Asda, in Bradford Road, crowds have held a vigil for their lost friend.

The Subaru was travelling away from the town centre at 6am when it skidded and smashed into a lamp-post.

Three passengers, one woman and two men, were still being treated at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary today.

At the scene yesterday one mourner said they would never forget their friend: "He was a great guy and everyone will miss him so much.

"I just cannot believe he is gone."

One message form Mr Sedgwick's son Branden reads: "To daddy, miss you so much, lots of love from your eldest son."

Police investigation teams are still trying to piece together exactly what happened.

Insp Mick Rollinson said police wanted to anyone who may be able to shed light on the tragedy.

"We need to hear from anyone who saw the Subaru around the town centre or near Bradford Road around the time of the accident," he said.

"We are still trying to piece together facts. We would like to speak to the driver and passengers of a silver Mazda seen with the Subaru in the Chapel Hill area in the early hours.

"Later, just before the accident, the car was seen travelling with a old-style, blue VW Golf and it is vital we speak to anybody who was in that car as well.

"It is incredible anyone walked away from this accident. It was a horrific scene."

Insp Rollinson confirmed officers had already been examining CCTV footage and would be continuing to scan tapes today.

He also said they would be making inquiries to see if the speed cameras on Bradford Road had caught either the Subaru or VW Golf.
