Friends, family and colleagues gathered on Monday to say farewell to a popular local figure.

Veteran trade unionist and Kirklees College caretaker Dave Ellis, 69, passed away at Kirkwood Hospice earlier this month after a battle with cancer of the oesophagus.

Fellow UNISON members led the procession as they marched in front of the hearse down the drive at Huddersfield Crematorium on Monday afternoon, where a ceremony was held for the stalwart socialist and Labour member known as “Mr Unison.”

Unison members march in front of the hearse at Dave Ellis's Funeral, Huddersfield Crematorium.

Among those marching was close friend Paul Holmes.

Paying tribute, Mr Homes said: “I’ve never met a more principled person.”

Mr Ellis was a former AEUW activist at David Brown’s for 20 years before moving to Kirklees College, where he was still working at the time of his death.
