Railway station volunteers have welcomed a charity sponsor on board.

The Friends of Huddersfield Station (FOHS), which staffs an information desk on the station concourse, has received signs and jackets bearing the voluntary group’s logo.

They were donated by Armitage Bridge-based One17 Charitable Trust, the charity wing of One17 Design architects.

The charity, which now has 18 volunteers, bought FOHS 20 waterproof jackets to keep volunteers warm and dry on the station platforms and in the draughty concourse.

Group secretary Hazel Spencer said: “They are very much appreciated with the cold weather just starting.

“We were cold before and people didn’t know who we were, but now we look more official and smarter.”

The group, which celebrates its first anniversary on December 12, has also welcomed Huddersfield Labour MP Barry Sheerman aboard as group patron.

The group of railway enthusiasts, which was formed on December 6 for the Festival of Light, runs an information point on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and special weekends, such as during Huddersfield Food Festival.

FOHS, which now belongs to the Association of Community Rail Partnerships (ACoRP), has Huddersfield Station manager, Paul Jackson, and transport consultant and former Kirklees councillor, Paul Salveson, among its supporters.

The group was set up to help promote Huddersfield to strangers and visitors and point them towards facilities and places of interest following the closure of Huddersfield Tourist Information Centre.
