A BENCH was dedicated to the memory of a local footballer at a charity tournament in Huddersfield.

Mr Alan Summersgill, of Highburton, affectionately known by his playing colleagues as "Glassback", died of cancer in July, aged 39.

The bench was presented to his widow, Ruth, and will be placed near a pitch at Leeds Road Playing Fields.

Mr Summersgill, a change manager for Asda at Leeds, was the father of a five-year-old daughter.

He had played football since he was a youngster and continued to play up until 12 months before he was overcome by his illness.

He had played for teams connected with ICI and the Ashbrow and Railway pubs.

Eight teams competed in the charity tournament at Leeds Road Playing Fields.

Refreshments were enjoyed later in Oakes WMC.

The event was organised by Mr Summersgill's former team-mates at the Ashbrow.
