COUNCILLORS are trying to keep Huddersfield’s Free Town Bus despite deep spending cuts.

Leeds City Council announced this week it would scrap its free service to save £170,000.

But Kirklees Council hopes to keep the Huddersfield bus, which stops at the University of Huddersfield, Queensgate Market and the bus and railway stations.

Councillors will decide on the 2011/12 budget on February 23.

Kirklees needs to make £80m of cuts in the next three years.

A council spokeswoman said yesterday: “Currently funding has been identified but, like everything, it will be up for review during the budget process.”
