Friends have raised £3,000 for charity in memory of Gavin Greig.

The match at Canalside, in May, raised money for St James’ Hospital, Leeds, where 23-year-old Gavin spent his last days.

Gavin, from Golcar, died from cancer which was caused by the anti-rejection drugs he was given following a heart transplant when he was a boy.

For 14 years after the transplant at a Newcastle hospital Gavin lived a normal life.

He was back at his school desk four months later and, aged 11, he won two gold medals and a silver at the British Transplant Games.

But he became ill with an aggressive form of lymphoma in December 2015 and died the following month.

Approximately 350 people, including players and spectators, turned out for the Canalside game, organised by his friends Andrew Allison and Jonathan Newiss.

The match was followed by a fundraising chest wax and raffle at Golcar Conservative Club.

Andrew, 33, said: “In the week of Gavin’s death friends pulled together for something to remember him by and by doing that, raised some money for the place that cared for him.

“It was an absolutely fantastic effort from everyone that came.

“It was a lovely day enjoyed by all.”

Andrew, from Lindley, says he hopes to make the memorial match an annual event.

He said: “Perhaps we will raise some money for the Newcastle hospital where he had the transplant – or it could be for Cancer Research.”

After leaving school Gavin went to work in the engineering department at Thomas Broadbent’s in Huddersfield.

The former Colne Valley High School pupil played for Golcar Cricket Club and football for Golcar United.

As a tribute to the Town fan, supporters organised a round of applause during the 23rd minute of Huddersfield’s match against Cardiff City in January.
