A student was arrested at the airport after ignoring his court date to go on holiday.

Gavin Miller appeared before Kirklees magistrates in custody yesterday.

His solicitor said that police have been asked to consider cautioning him as a conviction would be detrimental to his university career.

Magistrates were told that the 31-year-old had originally been due at the court on Thursday August 8.

He faced a charge of possessing cannabis at Huddersfield Police Station on July 27.

When he failed to attend a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Miller’s case was later adjourned so that police could consider offering him a drugs caution instead.

He then ignored an order to be back at the court on Monday September 9 and a warrant was executed again

Zahid Majeed, mitigating, said that his client was in his second year of a TV and film studies undergraduate degree.

He added that at a previous hearing he asked for a police caution as Miller faced being thrown off his course for a drugs-related conviction.

Mr Majeed said this client then went on holiday when he should have been at court four weeks later.

He said: “The prosecution and magistrates agreed to adjourn the case to see if a caution would be appropriate.

“There was no contact by police and he went on holiday and didn’t attend court.

“When he arrived back in the UK this morning he was arrested at the airport.”

Magistrates told Miller, of Epworth Street in Hull, that they were adjourning his case again for a caution to be considered.

He was granted unconditional bail until Friday October 11.
