Pupils from Kirklees and Calderdale performed better in this summer’s GCSEs than their peers across the rest of the country.

In Kirklees, 55.6% of pupils passed at least five A* to C grades, including English and maths, comfortably above the national average of 52.8%.

However, results were down by 0.6% in Kirklees this year, compared with a rise of 0.2% nationally.

Calderdale students did better, with a 60.3% success rate – up from 60% in 2014 – according to statistics from the Trinity Mirror Data Unit.

These figures have to be verified by the government in January and do not take into account exam appeals, schools’ requests to remove pupils, nor late results.

Once again, the schools with the best results all select their pupils. There is a 20% drop in the pass rate between the top three and King James’s, Almondbury, the best performing non-selective school.

Across the country, the top 20 schools were all either grammar schools or academies.

Based on these provisional results, the area’s top 10 schools are :

  1. North Halifax Grammar 97%, Crossley Heath 96%
  2. Heckmondwike Grammar 96%
  3. King James’s 76%
  4. Batley Grammar 71%
  5. Trinity Academy
  6. Halifax 71%
  7. Honley High 71%
  8. Holmfirth High 69%
  9. Rastrick High 66%
  10. Salendine Nook Academy Trust 65% .

Within Yorkshire, York and North Yorkshire districts emerged on top, both posting results more than 6% better than Kirklees. At the other end of the county league were Bradford and Hull, the only areas where results were below 50%.

The English Baccalaureate (EBacc), made up of English, maths, science, a language, and history or geography, was first introduced into the performance tables five years ago and is included again this year.

The best results in Kirklees were at Heckmondwike Grammar with a pass rate of 70%.
