A CANDIDATE for Kirklees Council elections has stood down only a day after the election roster was announced.

Mick Madden, who was standing as an independent candidate for the Holme Valley North ward, pulled out of the running for the May 6 vote on Saturday.

Mr Madden said: “I thought I would put a bit of fun into the election as there’s no Monster Raving Loony Party candidate this year.

“But I’ve realised I might take vital votes away from the other independent candidate Terry Lyons.

“I would like to apologise to people who have sponsored me.”

The remaining candidates for the Holme Valley North Ward are Barry Bowler (BNP), Carol Hirst (Lab), Ann Leach (Lib Dem), Terry Lyons (Ind), Royston Rogers (Con) and Barry Ward (Green).
