A frail pensioner was attacked and robbed near his home.

The 89-year-old is in hospital after suffering severe facial injuries.

Now police are appealing for witnesses to the attack on Rochdale Road in Greetland to come forward.

It happened between 6.40pm and 6.50pm on Friday.

The man, who walks with the aid of a zimmer frame, had been dropped off by taxi at home having been to work.

As he was walking up the drive of his house carrying a small holdall he was approached from behind.

He was then pushed to the floor and hit in the face by a tall man who made off with the bag containing a small amount of cash.

The incident happened close to the Nisa store.

Police said the victim is now recovering from his ordeal in hospital.

They are now appealing for witnesses who saw the attack or any vehicles being driven suspiciously in the area between 6pm and 7pm to help.

Det Sgt Ross Wadsworth, of Calderdale CID, said: “This was a particularly appalling attack against a hard working, elderly gentleman.

“The level of violence used against the victim was particularly vicious and completely unnecessary against a man who needs a zimmer frame to help him get around.

“It might be that the attacker had blood-stained clothing on when he returned home.

“ So if you suspect someone you know please come forward and help us catch the person responsible.”

Witnesses are asked to call Calderdale CID on 101.
