They came in all ages, shapes and sizes but the one thing they had in common was bravery.

Around 100 dare-devils aged from nine-years-old and upwards took part in a giant zip slide challenge at Huddersfield’s John Smith’s Stadium yesterday - Saturday.

The event was organised by the Huddersfield Giants and the Bradley-based Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice and they were delighted so many people agreed to take part in the hair-raising event.

It saw participants travel on a zip wire 500ft from inside the top of the Fantastic Media Stand at one end of the Stadium all the way down to the pitch below.

The Hospice are the Giants’ charity partners for the 2015 season. Participants were asked to pay a £20 registration fee and set a minimum sponsorship target of £100 but some raised much more.

An expected £10,000 will be split between the hospice and the Giants.

Olivia Beaumont, 13, a pupil at Holmfirth High School was fortunate to take part after she narrowly passed the weight requirement of 38 kilos, around six stones.

Cheered on by her parents Tim and Lucy and grandparents Peter and Pauline she said afterwards: “I Iike doing things like this and it’s all for charity so that’s great.”

Sue Walker, a mother-of-one from Newsome, said: “I have been so excited all week. It’s the first time I have done something like this.

“It was an amazing experience. It’s definitely something I would do again.”

Louise Marshall, a mother-of-two from Holmfirth raised £460 through sponsorship. A solicitor with Switalskis which has links with Forget Me Not she admitted: “It was nerve-wracking.”

Mark Kirrane-Perrin of Newsome added: “I had had a couple of beers when I agreed to do it and then there was no going back. When you are up there it is higher than what you think.

“And when you are being clipped in there’s no going back but once you set off it’s quite comfortable.”

One of the youngest to do it was nine-year-old Jude Morton, whose aunt is Emma Kovaleski, head of Corporate Fundraising for the hospice. He said: “I was very scared at first but I’ve done it twice now.”
