HUNDREDS of young runners put their best foot forward to raise cash for charity.

Youngsters from toddlers to 24-year-olds completed the one-mile Youth Against Cancer run at Leeds Road Playing Fields yesterday to raise money for teenage cancer charity The Laura Crane Trust (LCT).

The charity funds research into cancers affecting people aged 13 to 24 and provides support for patients undergoing treatment.

Helping out the young runners was Huddersfield Giants star Andy Raleigh and sponsors Fitness First and Huddersfield athletics shop Up and Running.

Second-rower Andy, who is the LCT’s youth ambassador, said: “I think it’s a great cause and it’s fantastic to see so many kids come out to support the charity.

“It’s good during the summer holidays that they’re doing something very positive.

“The cancer charity is close to most people’s hearts and it’s great to get the kids involved and get them fit.”

Among the young runners were several Giants fans.

Jack Richardson, 10, of Barnsley, who raised £200 for the event after losing both his grandparents to cancer this year, said: “I’m looking forward to raising money for LCT and I think the Giants will win at Wembley later this month.”

Georgia Clarke, 7, of Slaithwaite, said: “I’m looking forward to the run. I think I’ll finish it!

“We’re all going to Wembley the weekend after next and I think the Giants will win.”

Callum Taylor, 9, from Dalton said: “I’m looking forward to running today.”

LCT fundraising manager Pam Thornes added: “We are absolutely delighted.

“The Giants and the people throughout the area have put their best foot forward to support young people who aren’t having a good time of it at the moment.”

LCT was founded in 1996 in memory of Laura Crane who died from four types of cancer two weeks after her 17th birthday in May 1996.

Its patrons have included comedian Jack Dee and actress Zoe Lucker.

Comedienne and actress Catherine Tate has been LCT patron since October 2006.
