SCHOOLGIRLS in Huddersfield played in a big rugby festival.

Thirteen teams from high schools across Kirklees took part in the tag ruby scheme.

The competition pitted year 7 and year 8 pupils against each other and was hosted by Scissett Middle School, with most teams already engaging in curricular coaching provided by Huddersfield Giants Community Trust.

The year 7 tournament was a tightly contested affair and in the final were Kirkburton and Salendine Nook, with Salendine Nook edging out their opponents.

The year 8 competition saw Scissett outshining Kirkburton.

Steve Beatty, Huddersfield Giants Community Trust development officer said: “It’s fantastic to see the female game growing across Huddersfield and hopefully we will sustain this growth year-on-year and strengthen the links between schools and community clubs.”
