A LOCKWOOD man has hit out at Kirklees Council for taking almost two months to remove a dumped freezer from outside his home.

Graham Wilkinson moved into his house on Moor End Road on February 4.

He immediately spotted a large freezer which had been dumped in a stairwell at the side of his terraced property.

Mr Wilkinson reported the freezer to Kirklees Council on February 14.

They told him they would remove it for free because it had been dumped illegally.

The usual timescale for removal is five to 10 days.

But the freezer was not taken away until March 30 - after the Examiner questioned the council about the delay.

Mr Wilkinson said he called the council five times, asking why the eyesore had not been removed.

He even contacted a local councillor, who got in touch with the council's cleansing department.

He said: "Why was this not done on the first time of asking? The council does not need any more accusations of wasting taxpayers' money, but this farce plays into the hands of the critics."

He said he had been tempted to move the freezer himself, as it was blocking access to a drainpipe which needed repair.

He said: "But it would have been dangerous to move it myself. Also, some fridges and freezers have gases in them and have to be disposed of properly."

A spokeswoman for Kirklees Council said there seemed to have been a mix-up over the information, with details about a second freezer being passed to the council.
