A jobless man who appealed at the roadside for work has appeared before a district judge – just four days after his last court appearance.

Jason Allen, 36, was ordered to pay compensation on Thursday after stealing goods worth £63 from Tesco in Birchencliffe.

His appearance came days after he was released from a 12 week jail term imposed for an attempted theft.

The court heard that Allen, who had a problem with Class A drugs, stole to support his family.

The father-of-three made the Examiner headlines when he spent days at busy Wakefield Road in Aspley asking for work with a handmade sign.

He received many offers of work but is now on benefits after his recent stint in prison.

Unemployed dad-of-three Jason Allen took to Wakefield Road, Aspley, with a placard in a bid to find a job.

Allen appeared at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court today in custody after breaching his bail conditions.

He is on bail to Leeds Crown court on charges of burglary and theft from a motor vehicle.

His bail conditions are residence, now at Meltham Road in Lockwood, reporting to Castlegate Police Station on Mondays and Fridays and compliance with the Drugs Intervention Team.

But he failed to attend an appointment with the drug service on Friday and was arrested.

Prosecutor Ben Crosland said: “The defendant’s record is unenviable. Significantly, he has convictions for failing to answer bail and failing to comply with court orders.

“This is yet another example the court says of that failure.”

District Judge Michael Fanning released him on the same bail conditions as previously.

He told Allen: “Your record is appalling. You have to tread very carefully.

“If you breach the bail conditions again you are highly unlikely to get bail.”

Allen was rebailed until his crown court trial which takes place on April 21 next year.
