Forget the sprawling mountainous deserts of Texas, the golden beaches of Mallorca or the natural beauty of Hunan - Yorkshire is the place to be.

That's according to travel guide company, Lonely Planet, which has named Yorkshire the third best region to visit in the WORLD.

Sitting ahead of Hokuriku in Japan, New Zealand's West Coast and Ha'apai in Tonga - to name a few - Yorkshire has been dubbed the best county in England and one of the top worldwide travel destinations.

The historic county scored points for its stunning scenery, dynamic cities, friendly people and bustling food scene. It even ranked higher than the outstandingly picturesque Victoria Falls at the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The Best in Travel 2014 guide is a collection of the world’s hottest trends and destinations and includes "top tens" for countries, cities and regions across the globe.

Paris, Trinidad and Cape Town made up the top three cities, while Brazil and Antarctica topped the best countries. A little closer to home, Scotland ranked as the third best country to visit.

Alluding to the Olympics success of UK competitors from Yorkshire, the guide said of the historic county: "If the good people of Yorkshire were proud of their heritage before, the 2012 London Olympics only served to cement what they have always thought: that their county is better than - and really the best of - all the English counties.

"In 2014, this welcoming region of rugged moorlands, heritage homes and cosy pubs will be able to hold its head even higher when the Tour de France begins its grand depart from Leeds."

"Bradford has become the world’s first Unesco City of Film," the guide added.

"Fashion-thirsty Leeds has cut the ribbon on an ambitious retail development at a time when malls elsewhere in the UK are stalling.

"A new state-of-the-art gallery in Wakefield is giving London a run for its money, and Yorkshire now has more Michelin-starred restaurants than any other county outside London.

"As if basking in Yorkshire’s glory, last year a poll revealed the North Yorkshire spa town of Harrogate was the happiest place in Britain. We’re not surprised."

Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: "Endorsements rarely come much better than this, from a guide that has a worldwide reputation across tourism and informing visitors.

"This is massive for Yorkshire and our thousands of amazing tourism businesses, destinations and events.

"Welcome to Yorkshire has worked tirelessly with our partners since we launched in 2009 to put Yorkshire on the world map because we know how amazing and unique our county is.

"Seeing Yorkshire rank so highly in this guide is testament to the collective hard work that has been put in, not least in securing the Grand Départ of the Tour de France for Yorkshire next summer."

Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2014 contributor, Tom Hall, said Yorkshire is a fantastic "all-rounder," famed for its friendly residents.

"It’s about time that travellers wake up to the wonder that is Yorkshire," he added.

"Listing the county as one of the best regions in the world for visitors in the coming year is in recognition of it being a fantastic all-rounder; with some of the most stunning scenery in the country, dynamic cities, friendly people and a burgeoning food scene.”
