TWO brothers have appeared at court after a dog allegedly ripped into a mum’s cheek in the middle of the street.

Wiqas Mahmud, 29, and Shahid Mahmud, 35, both of Banks Crescent, Golcar, have been charged with owning a mixed-breed dog banned under the Dangerous Dogs Act and allowing it to be dangerously out of control.

Yesterday, Huddersfield Magistrates decided that, because of the severity of the victim’s injuries, the case should be heard at crown court and the brothers will appear again on May 6 for a committal hearing.

The pitbull-type dog, called Troy, allegedly attacked Waheeda Akhtar, 26, on Upper Mount Street in Lockwood on March 2.

The mum-of-two suffered from horrific facial injuries as she tried to protect her one-year-old son Asudlla who she was pushing in his buggy.

Waheeda, from Lockwood, stepped in front of the dog which grabbed her leg pulling her to the ground, before biting off her cheek.

Builders working nearby rushed over with spades and heavy objects to fight the dog back.

Waheeda was rushed to Bradford Royal Infirmary for reconstructive surgery.

The dog was captured at Kilner Bank two days after the incident and is being held in kennels.
