A GOLCAR councillor is to stand for the role as police and crime commissioner.

Clr Andrew Marchington, right, has been selected as the Liberal Democrat candidate for the West Yorkshire job.

The elections take place nationwide on November 15.

He said: “Whilst Labour and the Conservatives seem intent on turning policing into a party political battleground I want to run a positive campaign that concentrates on solutions that work to cut crime.

“In my role as a councillor I have secured funding for the Restorative Justice Scheme in Kirklees included in the annual budget and oversaw its introduction.

“The scheme involves staff and volunteers working with more serious offenders and their victims.

“Working within the Kirklees Community Safety Partnership there have been significant reductions in reoffending.

“This is real action on crime on the ground.”

Clr Marchington was first elected in 2004 and has been cabinet member.

In 2010 he joined the West Yorkshire Police Authority, chaired the Local Policing Committee and was a West Yorkshire Police Authority representative to the Association of Police Authorities.

He chaired the Kirklees Violent Crime Task Group which he says oversaw a dramatic drop in violent crime of 30%.

Calderdale’s Clr Geraldine Carter is the Conservative candidate and Wakefield’s Labour candidate, Clr Mark Burns Williamson, the current West Yorkshire Police Authority chairman, have also been selected.
