PENSIONERS were treated to meals on super-stylish wheels.

They got the special treatment when members of the Wolseley Owners Club delivered their dinner.

Two Wolseley owners joined forces with the organisers of the Golcar Meals on Wheels service to take a two-course hot meal to Golcar residents yesterday.

Chris Chantrell, the club’s technical director, was joined by Wolseley owners Graham Jones and Alan Watson as they drove their own vehicles with the volunteers to deliver the meals.

Sharon Higginbotham, coordinator of the vital service, said: “We cover the Golcar area which includes Scapegoat Hill and Wellhouse and we were delighted the Wolseley Owners Club contacted us to offer to help.

“They came to see what we’re doing and then took us out delivering the meals. A lot of the pensioners we serve a dinner to came out to have a look at the cars and we hope they’ll come back again and help us.”

David Ashburner, membership director of the Wolseley Owners Club, which has helped Meals on Wheels volunteers nationally, said: “The club wants to raise further awareness for the elderly in the Golcar community, for the elderly generally and hopes more volunteers come forward to help with the Meals on Wheels scheme.”

Sharon, a nurse for Locala, and her sister Lynn Ainley, a care assistant at Meadow Court at Hill Top, were both volunteers with the Slaithwaite and the Hairy Bikers Meals on Wheels volunteers which appeared on BBC television last year.

The Slaithwaite team realised there was demand coming from Golcar so Sharon and Lynn set the wheels in motion to form a delivery service in the area.

Thanks to the Golcar Lily pub at Bolster Moor, which makes the meals every Wednesday for free, the volunteers can deliver them to elderly people in the Golcar area.

Sharon added: “We started it in January and we now deliver to 34 people.

“As well as getting a hot dinner they also get someone to talk to, it’s a social thing for many of them because they are elderly and cannot get out, so it’s nice for them to have a chat to someone else.”

The meals on wheels service provides a two-course hot lunch every Wednesday for £3.
